CASHING IN ON A NEWSLETTER

Mainstream Newsletters like The Hustle or Morning Brew have been very popular over the past few years. I think of a Newsletter like a YouTube channel. You can do one on any topic you can think of, and instead of video, it’s written word, much like blogging.

Newsletters are not just a platform for communication. They are a valuable asset that, when utilized effectively, can become a significant revenue stream for creators. Here are a few strategies you can employ to monetize your newsletters:

Premium Content: One of the most common ways to monetize your newsletter is by offering premium content to paying subscribers. Platforms such as Substack, Beehiiv, and email service providers facilitate this process by allowing you to set up paid subscriptions where subscribers gain access to exclusive content, early access to new products or services, or entry into a private community.

Sponsorships: Sponsorships can be a lucrative way to monetize your newsletter. Companies are always looking for ways to reach targeted audiences, and if your newsletter aligns with a brand's target market, they may be willing to pay to have their products or services featured in your newsletter. This could be in the form of a dedicated email, a sponsored section, or a subtle mention within your content.

Referrals: Referral programs like SparkLoop offer an opportunity to earn commissions by promoting other newsletters to your audience. By sharing newsletters that you find valuable and believe your readers will appreciate, you can generate additional income while providing added value to your readers.

Product or Service Sales: If you offer products or services relevant to your audience, your newsletter can serve as a platform to promote these offerings. This could range from selling digital products, like eBooks or online courses, to promoting physical products, or even offering services like coaching or consulting.

If you are starting out, I suggest Substack or Beehiiv for your Newsletter. Substack is totally FREE unless you monetize, they will take 10% of your subscriber payments. Beehiiv is free up to 2,500 subscribers, and then there are monthly premiums.

Substack is a very social platform and a leader in the space. They also have “notes” which is similar to Twitter platform itself. Beehiiv has many tools and growth aids to help you grow. Just try both and see what works for you!

What’s important is that you start one!
